2009 Designs for life: Twenty-first Century Lindal Homes by Turkel Design.

Joel Turkel is recognized for the natural beauty, livability and environmental sensibility of his residential architecture.

Born in Seattle and raised in British Columbia, he earned a bachelor of environmental studies from the University of Manitoba, and a masters of architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

As the Creative Director of Empyrean International, he played a key role in the development of the Dwell Homes program, a new generation of prefabricated modern homes.

Turkel has held a faculty position at the School of Architecture and Planning at MIT and is a frequent guest lecturer of at architecture schools throughout the United States. In 2007, he founded Turkel Design with his wife and partner Meelena Oleksiuk Turkel.

“We’ve created a series of efficiently designed homes that respond to the contemporary dwelling expectation through the intelligent use of circulation, shared space, structure, volume, and light.”

“These homes incorporate many principles of environmentally conscious design – the use of natural and sustainable materials, passive gain and shading, whole-house natural ventilation, to name a few.”

“They have been carefully proportioned to maintain a reference to their Lindal roots, while at the same time being fresh and exuberant. Each design is a starting place, and we look forward to personalizing them for Lindal clients.”
